So you can't hear anything? Or just certain programs? PCs running Windows sometimes have individual settings for the source of the sound in addition to the Volume Control. But I'd check the Volume Control first. It'll either be a little speaker symbol in the bottom right of the screen, or you can get to it through the Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Entertainment. There are different sliders in there so make sure that all of the sliders are up just in case. Then also check the program that is creating the sound to make sure its volume is turned up.

You didn't say what kind. Some have a volume knob on the edge of the case. Toshiba and some Compaqs have this feature. If not the case, do a thorough virus scan and if necessary reload the driver from the devices in the system through the control panel. There should be an Icon in the right taskbar. Right click on it and make sure everything concerning sounds is set to at least 50% and mothing is muted. Some have an advanced settings menu as well.

Which settings? Go to Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume page go to Advanced and check that the Wave volume is maximum. Go to the Sounds page and see if you can get sounds for any of the Program events. Also check that the earphone is not inserted in the socket. Is it just system sounds that don't work? Will CDs play?

Why don't you password protect your computer? It's not too difficult to set up but it's best if you can do that through the BIOS. The procedure depends on the computer.
