Aren’t we just taking an easy way out by claiming human nature? Is this not a form of self-deception and denial of the great responsibility that each of us has in choosing our moral values? By claiming; “it is human nature”, aren’t we shifting the blame to “forces” outside our control while the truth is that we should sort out our mess and take the blame for our action.

While we should always take responsibilty for the things we do, it is human nature. We are the only species that will kill one another out of spite or revenge. Every other species on the planet only does this out of their own protection, or for their own survival. While too many people do try to blame human nature and use it as an excuse, not everyone does this; just the larger part of the population. As we have evolved as human beings, I think we've forgotten what used to be our own instincts. I honestly believe children have better instincts than adults because they have yet to go through all of the conditioning that we do as growing up. It drives me crazy when I hear someone plead "temporary insanity", there's no such thing. Just because someone lacks the self control to stop their own actions does not mean they should get an easy plea out for all the crap they pull.

Zim, you decided to be deep this week! I'm not sure weather I'd be able to express myself adequate enough on this one. But my understanding is that we all have to choose our values for ourselves. On the other hand, there are no simple answers to matters ethical. How can we work out what we should do from a scientific description of the way the world is? Each person is forced to make ethical decisions and that should come from outside guidance, because they are ethics. Yes, I agree that claims of human nature in ethics are a denial of the freedom to choose and we use it to run away from our responsibilities...^^))))

BTW. Human Nature is a theory.

Blaming human nature is merely a broad way of saying "thats the reason i am who i am" without really explaining squat. Obviously no two humans think alike. The human mind in some cases becomes cluttered with irrational ideas. We all have seen it many times before in history. It is up to the revolutionary thinkers themselves to free those who refuse to accept that in which who and what they are. In short, we are complicated beings and that explaining how the mind works can not be simplified into words. Just motions. If you feel so strongly about human nature, check yourself first, then rationalize WITH the world, rather than against it. To understand the world, one must understand themselves first. You are saint. don't forget that.

I never knew that there was such a theory, and simply believed that it was a bad excuse in most instances that it was used. The major problem would be that what 'human nature' is perceived to be would differ from society to society; and such a theory would therefor have to take cognisance of the fact. The theory itself one would therefor think can only be that people use their own natural impulses (created through society they live in) as a way the explain their behavious that would normally not be acceptable.

Did anyone ever propose this as a theory? (If someone has done some work on this, please provide the link)

Hi. Human nature is the result of many generations of development. It is more of an observation than a theory. Folks tend to be in survival mode most of the time. Altruism is common but not part of our 'Nature'.

Great question zim!
You'r dead right, claiming "human nature" is the lazy way out.
Instead of focusing on real issues, it seems easier to become complacent and to say "nothin to worry about, its just human nature." as if the buck stops there.
Also it does make its easier to not take responsibillty.

If you'r gonna use this term, you have to define it very clearly, as i think its one of those terms that can have any meaning attached to it.

I believe that our choosing to act against our human nature is what set us apart from animals as intellegent beings. I guess some people use it as an exuse for their flaws.

It is a form of self-deception because you always have a choice and one should be prepared and able to face the consequences of that decision you make

Some people are just too lazy to consider their actions, and justify their misdeeds by saying "that´s the way I am". Sometimes the best way is not the easiest way.
