Like if a guy wants to wear something other than pants/shorts.
Or if a woman actually asked a guy out or made any sort of first move.
or any number of things someone might want to do that really wouldn't hurt anyone or be lewd.

Yeah I wonder too.
I think the society creates some models or "boxes" where everybody should fit in. Some trends that are poured over us (for example on Tv, cinemas). Somebody who is against the current will have then the response of the society.

society is not unaccepting of anything different. Thats kinda the problem. Thats why whe have all these little gothic freaks (sorry not just picking on goths, that goes for emo (whatever the hell that is), screamo, thugs, hoochies, wanna-be's) who have no manners and really creep the hell out of a lot of people. I would say that is a pretty understanding society. Im not saying everyone should be the same. PARENTS THIS IS TO YOU: learn to say no to your children. I promise it will not scar them for life. I lived a very deprived/ er normal life, and I am a successful 22 year old productive member of society.

Times have changed very much with the exceptence of so many things. Personally I dont care what someone wear's or who asks who out first, or how many piercings (and where) they have them, I figure I have moved with the times and I guess have too much happening within my own life to give a damn about judging others. Im guessing there are many many people that need to concentrate more on their own business/things happening and then they, will not be so judgemental......

Society can also be very accepting of difference. We celebrate those with extraordinary talent and abilities.

My experience is that people that go beyond the social norms in terms of dress, etc - is that they want and expect attention. If the goal is self-expression, then the surest way to be heard is to go beyond the norm.

"when everyone is special... no one is"

society has always been accepting to new ways of living, dressing, appearances etc. mostly people in society don't want to see any changes even positive ones. be it women coming in job markets, aquiring good positions in mnc's, or youngsters are more open in relationships. these society sick people don't want new talent and youngsters and their ideas to come forward.my conclusion to this is that do what you wanna do and don't care of what think or say. create your own world on your own terms.
