Normally, you will have to appear in court even for a civil case. If for some reason, your county doesn't require your presence, just type up what is called an affidativ. This is a formal statement where you tell your side. Make sure to have it notarized.

Deny all the allegations in the complaint by citing valid defenses such as payment, prescription of the case, mistake and others.
