History is the interpretation of past events, societies and civilisations. The term history comes from the Greek historia (ἱστορία), "an account of one's inquiries," and shares that etymology with the English word story. The 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica stated that "history in the wider sense is all that has happened, not merely all the phenomena of human life, but those of the natural world as well. It is everything that undergoes change; and as modern science has shown that there is nothing absolutely static, therefore, the whole universe, and every part of it, has its history."

History is the correlation of events that have taken place during a lifetime, or in ones lifetime, and recorded. Then others later on can look back, like a diary and see what happen. They can build they're future on this. Unlike what one said, that history is untrue events, this in itself is untrue.
This wouldn't be history but a story. Whether written by the church or religious groups, written by government leaders, we ourselves have to interpret this and determine ourselves which are true then, we write it down and, use it to guide us toward our on future.
A famous person once said "Lest we forget" in the battle of "Dunkirk" and the battle of Britain. He was using the term for his people in using history as a purpose, to let the people know to not forget the men , so many that died for those in the mother country.

There is the history that is the story of what people want you to THINK was true, to control the masses today... the history of Christianity is full of this. Heck, they kept European's from even READING for decades! As well, they suppressed the fact that the world is round, etc.
Or even Christopher Columbus "discovering" North America
Then there is the history that is the story of what actually DID happen, like Roman's traveling to North America, African's traveling to North and South America, Norse traveling to North American, Pre-Roman European's traveling to North America, Irish Monks traveling to North America....

History is the story told by the victorious to make to discredit the losers. Ergo, the defeated are generally cast as 'barbaric' or 'primative' or 'evil'; when, in fact, the simple truth is that they had some critical resource the victor needed and wouldn't barter, sell or trade on the victor's terms.
Example:
O peration
I raqi
L iberation (later changed to Freedom)

History is the version (or revision if you will) of what happened in the past that the people currently in control want you to believe.
