I'm going out on a limb,and saying that "those little balls with spikes" would be some sort of flail.

Maces are generally more of a "club" than a flail, their tops have distinctly different shapes. And flails were adapted to bash through plate armor during the Middle Ages (not that maces weren't)- but I would think that's what you're talking about.
