I have a fish in my aquarium that cut its tail while I did my weekly tank change. The wound bled a little then stopped. He seems to be fine now and swims around normally. However he stills has the red area where he got cut on his tail. I just changed his water, will this avoid infection or is there anything else I can do to avoid infection. He is the only fish in the aquarium.

oh and he is a fresh water tropical tetra ( phantom tetra)

Phantom Tetras are schooling fish, and as such, should be kept in groups of 5+. The first thing you should do is get him some Phantoms to hang out with. This will relieve the stress of being so venerable, which will help to prevent stress from weakening his immune system further. To prevent infection, add 1/2 a cup of Kosher salt per 10 gallons (you should have your fish in AT LEAST a 10 gallon tank). The salt will help kill any bacteria, and boost his immune system as well. Email me if you have any questions.

If the water is well maintained, the tail should heal up well by itself.

If you're worried you can drop a couple drops of anti-fungus into to prevent fungus infection on the wound. Thats about it :)

Good luck.
