According to Warren Buffet a few years ago, he said China will overtake the USA by 2050
He revised that down around a year ago and said 2025
Other economic leaders seem to mirror what Buffet said.
I think it will be 2020.
Reason.
China has a labor force of over 800 million, that is almost 3 times the total population of the USA.
They also have unemployment and under employment problems because of this. That will keep wages and the cost of living low for decades.
They have a huge amount of untapped resources.
They are rapidly buying up oil contracts from countries we refuse to do business with. They don't have much choice, because the west has the rest. However, I believe China is smart enough not to use economic sanctions to force change in those countries, but rather do it slowly and diplomatically while holding the economic carrot in their face.
China is also improving their education sector, and at the same time sending their best and brightest overseas to the west for a superior education.
China believes in a countries right to self determination and has pledge to the world and its people it will not invade a sovereign nation. Because of this, China believes in diplomacy over finger pointing, accusations and threats.
China is a very old and wise country that learns from its past mistakes.
To compare Japan or other countries that didn't reach the top economically is ignoring China's huge labor pool plus the one over riding factor that will get China to the top. That's, China plans, the USA just muddles along. Which served the USA well for decades because we were the only game in town. Now that is no longer the case. Yet we still muddle along in an economic world that existed in the past, but is no longer applicable.
The reason:
Globalization has leveled the playing field.
Our biggest enemy is our arrogance and go it alone attitude.
Our biggest ally is we could learn one hell of a lot from China.
Our biggest problem, we'll continue with divisive politics and arguing about things that do not affect us, rather then planning for our future..........that is, till its too late.
Signed, an ex pat from the USA living in the heart of China.
I am constantly amazed at what is happen in this country and I fully believe that China will be the bellwether that all countries want to aspire to be like in the future. I'm no American hater, I'm a realist who understands, unless American changes, it's biggest enemy is itself. Don't care if a repug is in power or dem. It all evens out in the wash that we do not plan for our future.
Peace
Jim

Jim, you are the king of sugarcoating! Congrats. You ignore the mountain of problems China is creating for itself as it runs towards economic prosperity. What of the environmental disaster China is creating for itself? What of the growing imbalance between men and women in the country? 20 million single men unable to find a woman is likely to cause serious social problems. What of the continued lack of democracy, the unending control of that good ol boys club called the Communist party? I'm certain if you were a Falun Gong practitioner your attitude would not be so cheerful. Tibet? Xinjiang? Have you spoken to an exiled Tibetan or a Uigher? What of Sudan and Myanmar? Do these things not matter to you?

Actually no, Chinas economy can not maintain the current growth to the your continuing consumption of oil.
Oil is running out and within the next 20 years any economy still based around oil will be in serious trouble.
But, the US economy will also be in the junk and countries like canada, russia, the middle east will actually be on top, as they will have stopped providing their oil for other countries consumtion

Although the sleeping giant is awake but it still need to organize its country to avoid minor problem that will cause the fall of the giant. So i think it will take some time as the more you develop the more problem you will encounter.

China will never "overtake" the United States. China's got massive, enormous, demographic problems that simply can't be solved. China will get old before China becomes rich.

Gee, Tibet and Taiwan and Eastern Europe don't consider the US to be a bully... Neither did France right after WWII, even though we killed a lot of people there.
Answer: China will overtake the US the minute the US becomes more Communist than China. That will be after Jan, 2009.
