"Boning" is just a way to burnish leather using a piece of hard, smooth bone or antler.
The friction created, works the oil or polish into the material same way as hand polishing furniture.
Boots or holsters should be "stuffed" to prevent wrinkles while the leather is being rubbed w/ the bone.
It is also used to dress cut edges by applying a little egg white before "boning".
