Popular; I don't know, that would depend on what sort of things you're interested in.
Notorious; there is a list as long as your arm.
It comes down to personal choice and what country you come from, I guess.
In Australia,one of our most notorious murderers is Ivan Milat.
His crimes became known as the Backpacker murders. Milat is currently serving seven life sentences in New South Wales.

The most popular is anyone the mainstream media chooses. Do you think that anyone would have been all gaga over Paris Hilton and the rest of them if the media hadn't thrown them all in our faces? Of course not.

Elizabeth hit the nail on the head. Many people lament the passing of Luciano Pavarotti. Many people have never heard of him. Rock, Rap and wrestling fans worship people I wouldn't recognize if they knocked at my door. For notorious, I'd go with Bin Laden, though many folk who hate our values but love our money would not agree.

I don't know about the most popular...I don't get in to all that but I think the most notorious is Albert Fish...but he's dead now...i think..... If you don't know who he is then I don't suggest that you read about him unless you want to be sick to your stomach.
