Gold for Aztecs?

Question

How come gold was popular in Mexico/central America. And not in north America. with the native north Americans.
In Mexico they build great statues, pyramids with gold. And in north America gold did not seem to be popular

I think there were a lot of gold deposits throughout South and Central America and not so many in North America. The major gold strike we have seen is North America was the one in Northern Californa.
Silver, like found in large quantities in the Southwest, was very popular with tribes like the Navaho and Pueblo.
