They couldn't be more different! CD stores, book stores, wall*mart, Yahoo Answers... I went to over 10 CD stores today and every single one of them Rock and Pop were grouped together.

Punk gets it's own catagorey (not on this website but still), Thrash, Hardcoar, Hiphop/Rap, Country... they all get their own catagorey.

And the other thing that irritates me is they put things like Metal, ALT, ect. in with the Rock. I dont get why those catagoreys dont get their own shelves. It's not like there isnt enough of it to make up a full aisle.

Most other generes of music take up one aisle.

The Rock/Pop one takes up like 6.

It just pisses me off. It shouldn't be that hard to put things into right groups.

Many artists mix rock and pop. If you listen to mainstream music, you can here it. In the 60's, bands like the Beatles or the Beach Boys were a mixture of rock and pop.

Punk shouldn't get its own category. Thrash definitely shouldn't. And if you mean hardcore punk, why should that get its own category?!?! I mean if punk already gets its own, why would hardcore need one?

All the stuff above, including metal (even though thrash IS metal) and alternative are all rock sub-genres. If they weren't within the rock category, then why would people post questions about metal, punk, alternative, etc. music in the ROCK (and Pop) section? Why not the Other - Music section?

Why would people want to split rock up anyway? If you do that, each section would only get one or two questions a day, meaning there probably would be less people who participate.

And seriously, how many times has this question been asked?

Aaah, ain't that the truth.
Rock is the most general music genre.
All rock listeners are different. Those who listen to Fall Out Boy are pretty much on the opposite side of the spectrum from those who like, say, Black Sabbath, for example.
Just look at the genres and sub-genres.
Alternative, Classic, Glam, Grunge, Folk, Indie, Heavy metal, Hard rock, punk, pop-punk, post-punk, hardcore, emotional hardcore (known by the masses as 'emo'), post-hardcore, screamo, power pop, nu metal, etc.
Do you see that depth in pop music? Or rap? Or hip-hop?

I think not.

So, to get back to your original question, it shouldn't be, because pop is entirely different from rock. Because pop is what's hip at the moment, whereas rock music and its various sub-divisions will last for the ages.
and wow, did that sound really pseudo-philosophical.

I agree, but it's definitely not just rock and pop.

Hip hop and R&B are not the same thing, but they're always grouped together.

Folk and country are definitely not the same thing, but they're always grouped together.

Techno and electronica are not the same thing, but again, they're always grouped together.

And don't even get me started on "classical" music. It's not like they have separate categories for Baroque, romantic, contemporary, or impressionistic music.
