my fiance is a computer programmer...he has a masters degree and is very knowledgable in this field. however, he cannot seem to get a job in that field. he is european though is this the reason? do employers just not want the hassle of visas (which he has for us getting married) or whats the problem? he assisted on a few projects, but thats it for experience. but how can he gain expereince when no one will hire him?! what can we do?

I don't think that he can't get a job because the hassle of visas. Is he picky of where he works? If he is then that might be the reason. He needs to start somewhere. Starts at a smaller company and build experience from there. You said that he is knowledgeable in the field but that's in Europe. There are jobs out there but sometimes people refuse to do it because of the title or the size of the company or etc. If he really wants to get a job then he shouldn't be too picky.

We have many experienced programmers out of work that were unemployed since 2000 when we finished the work to survive Y2K. Now there just isn't the need for so many programmers. I worked software until 2000 and had all the overtime I could work since 1994 but had to change careers after the Dot.Bomb

I think your additional information has the answer. You live in an area where there are few jobs. Lots of competition for few jobs makes it difficult for anyone.

You said he has his visa, and later he will have a green card by marrying you. So I don't think this is the issue.

If his getting a job is the highest priority, then I agree - you will probably have to move.

MAAAAAYBE he hasn't really LOOKED for a job. I would tell him to take any job available until the job he really wants comes up. At least then some form of income is being made.

you may want to consider redoing the resume. it should point out accomplishments, improvements to process... look at the positions that meet his experience ... go for those and then move up....it will happen fast.... also, read up a lot on leadership... theres a ton on the internet.... brush up on interviewing.....how does he dress for success etc... and good luck.... always have a smile....
