You did the right thing. A warm bath is the right thing to do. (You don't want to induce shivering, as that will INCREASE temperature.)

You should call the nurseline or page your pediatrician. In the meantime, treat your baby at home.

I agree that Motrin is a better fever reducer, and it IS what they will give in the ER. You can give Motrin and Tylenol together, then alternate every three hours. If the two together don't drop the temp to under 102, then take your little one in.

But our oldest daughter ran high fevers (105+) at the drop of a hat, and she also had febrile seizures. And we were always told that for the most part, fever can almost always be safely treated at home until you can get into the doctor's office.

The ER is full of nasty germs, and your baby's immune system is already working overtime. If fever is the only symptom and you go to the ER, you will sit in triage for ages because it is truly NOT an emergency.

Call the nurseline. Keep doing what you're doing. Try the two drugs together. Do another bath. Offer lots of liquids. You're doing fine.

Good luck.

(Kids can run fevers up to 106 and not suffer any damage whatsoever.)

When in doubt, it's always best to call your child's pediatrician - if the office is closed, they will usually page the dr and have them call you.

"If your baby is 6 months or older, call if his fever reaches 103 degrees F (39.4 degrees C) or higher.

When you call, the doctor will probably ask you about other symptoms. The most important thing is how your baby looks and acts — if he has lost his appetite, has little energy, is noticeably pale or flushed, or is extremely irritable and can't be consoled, or if you notice other changes in his behavior and appearance.

Be on the lookout for any of the following symptoms, which could indicate a more serious problem when coupled with a fever:

• Your baby has small, purple-red spots on his skin that don't turn white or paler when you press on them, or he has large purple blotches. Both of these can signal a very serious bacterial infection.

• Your baby is having difficulty breathing (working harder to breathe or breathing faster than usual) even after you clear his nose with a bulb syringe. This could indicate pneumonia or bronchiolitis."

I would take your baby to the ER. But a word of advice. I have never had any luck with Tylenol on fevers. Motrin works wonders! That's what they will give him at the ER. Motrin usually starts working in about 30 minutes. I've always have been told that if they have a high fever, after you give them tylenol/motrin, check it again in 30 minutes if it's not better. Go to the ER. I'm sure he'll be ok, but take him just in case!

Definitly your child has an underlying condition that should be looked after as soon as possible. Take him to ER and have a Dr check him out as soon as possible.
