^ = exponent:
(5y^2)/4 = 8
=> 5y^2 = 32
=> y^2 = 32/5
=> y = (32/5)^(1/2) = 2.53 if you want decimal

If you mean 5y-squared over 4 equals 8, then:
Multiple both sides by 4. The 4 will cancel on the left side and the 8 will become 8X4 = 32.
So: 5y*2*=32.
Then, you can divide both sides by 5 to get y*2* = 32/5.
You can then square root both sides of the equation to get:
y= sqrt(32/5).
I hope I understood the original equation correctly. Depending on what form you want the answer in, the form of the answer can vary.

5y^2 / 4 = 8
you said that y=2
substitute y with 4
[5(2)^2] / 4 = 8
follow ^mdas rule...exponent first, then multiplication, then division...
5(4) / 4 = 8
20 / 4 = 8
5 not equal to 8 so equation is FALSE
but if you said to find y then:
5y^2 / 4 = 8
5y^2 = 32...divide both sides by 5
y^2 = 32/5
y^2 = 6.4...then get the square root of both sides
y = 2.5298

If i read this correctly you are tyring to say it is
5y^(2/4)=8 (resolve the fraction)
5y^(1/2)=8 (1/2 exponent is another way of saying sqaure root so square both sides)
5y=64
y=64/5 or 12.8
If I misread it and it should have been
(5y^2)/4=8 then multiply both sides by 4
5y^2=32 (divide both sides by 5)
y^2=32/5
y=sqrt(32/5) or 2.5298
Hope this helps.

You need to isolate y.
First multiply both sides by 4:
5y*2* = 32
Then divide by 5:
y*2* = 32/5
Then take the square root (which I can't think of documentation for on a computer):
you answer simplified is 4(root 2) over (root 5)

I assume this is (5/4)y^2=8.
Then y^2 = 32/5 and y= 4sqrt(2)/sqrt(5)
Since people don't like radicals in the denominator, we multiply both num and denom by sqrt(5) to get (4/5) sqrt(2)*sqrt(5) or 4 sqrt(10)/5
