"The Uplift" Series by David Brin or "The Left Hand Of Darkness" by Le Guin stick out in my mind. Heinlein also had several alien novels like "The Puppet Masters" and "Starship Troopers". You could check out the list of Hugo winners at the website below and find some pretty good alien novels.
Just remembered "Of Men and Monsters" by William Tenn and "Jem" by Fred Pohl. Both excellent
Don't really believe in modern alien visitation. Think its a crock. So I can't help you in that department.

Might be a little off target, but try 'Communion" by Whitley Streiber....interesting and intriguing, and claimed to be a non-fiction account
Also, get your hands on a short story called "The Streets of Ashkelon" - it is brilliant
