It just seems to me, more and more that the ones who actually know and care get drowned out by the sound of petty partison politics, uneducated voting and self-interested politicians.

Representative governments tend to work the best for advanced countries. It is plain to see what governments are working by looking at the amounts of people trying to enter their countries. Millions of people immigrate to democracies every year. That simply isn't the case for countries with authoritarian governments. More often people aren't allowed to leave such places. Even though the special interests and corruption are taking their toll on american democracy, it is still pretty much working the same as it always has. It just seems worse because of all the advances in communications technology. Every action a government leader makes can be monitored and put in the paper, or on the internet, or on television almost as it happens. In earlier times in the US the same things went on but it was harder to know they were occuring because the sources for information were newspapers and word of mouth. He said she said crap hasn't usually been considered the most accurate way to convey information and literacy is also more prevalent now then in earlier decades. Of course since you seem to have found a problem you're now obligated to try to correct it, right?

You must be confusing America with a democracy. See, the US is a REPUBLIC which is similar to, yet different than, a democracy.

A house divided cannot stand my friend ... and America is certainly divided.

Democracy=Electoral College,right?
If that's right then NO.
Republic =popular vote
If that's right
then NO again.
So I guess either way the answer is a resounding NO.

You seem to be comparing democracy to perfection, while realistic alternatives are tyranny and totalitarianism... Compared to those, democracy, as corrupt and imperfect as it can be at times, indeed works, and works well.
