Who is responsible? Is there a bad guy?

Yes, that makes you a user. Even a person who likes to give still needs to receive. We all need to receive, even the person who might give too much, especially if giving to a taker. And especially if the taker knows they are dealing with a giver. To take and not give back when you know the person is giving from the heart turns you into a user. And a loser! Shame on them! ☼

It does not necessarily make you a user, provided that you return the favor as best you can (or as soon as you are able to). In most cultures, people who accept gifts, but do nothing to return the favor have a serious lack of basic manners.

On the other hand, it is frowned upon for the other person to give a gift, with the expectation of either taking it back, or purely to get something in return (a person who does this is known as an "Indian giver").

Each of you is responsible for your own social standing, and there should be no "bad guy" in true giving; the entire purpose is to strengthen social bonds by helping (or accepting help) in time of need. People who violate these cultural hypernorms, by giving gifts with strings, or by hurting those who have been generous (or not repaying them someday), are not viewed kindly by most people. As long as you don't fall into either of these categories, you should do fine.

If you take something someone wants to give you once I don't think that makes you a user. If you do it repeatedly and never give back in return, then yes it seems that you are a user.

That depends on if the taker is actually always a taker, and takes advantage of the giver. : )

Yes, but the giver is allowing himself to become used. It's the giver's fault. If the giver is kind and caring, he probably wouldn't care though.

True giving does so with no expectation of anything in return. So, no it doesn't make anyone a user. It just makes us all human.
