I tutor preteens/young teens and they all listen to pretty bad music (Hannah Montana, Jonas Brothers, FOB, P!atD) and I told them, "you know there's alot better music out there?" and they said they know, but they're too young to know it.
What kind of excuse is "I'm too young to listen to good music?"
When I was their age, I was jamming to the Beatles, do they expect good music to just come to them with age?
Anyone else come across this kind of behavior before?

It gets a little old but to some degree it's a fair defense. Kids in general don't have as much freedom or time to do a lot of the things adults take for granted. I have often maintained that once these kids escape the pack mentality, some will actually acquire some semblance of musical taste. It will always be easier to copy what your friends do as opposed to making the journey on your own.

lol
its really their only excuse
event though its not an excuse at all
looking back, yes i listened to some awful music at ages until 12-13. but i dont really regret it. i might have turned out even more awkward and strange than i am now. what can i say, it was fun! but yea, once you get to the teen years, i think our ears and minds must mature along with our bodies.

-but i did like the beatles and metallica and other good stuff my parents liked.

bytheway ... acctually ive never heard of mike oldfield! but im listening to him now, its pretty good!

-i did a quick search, think it must be Fonzie T

I am 56.
Grew up in New Jersey about 8 miles ouside of NYC.
We had a few top ten stations.
And a station that played what might be called mob hits....Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Jerry Vale.
And a station that played songs from Braodway musicals.
And a couple of R&B stations.
And a soul station.
I was exposed to all sorts of stuff early on.
There were plenty of times I listened to what the adults around me were listening to.
In the summer of my discontent 1966 I was working with my stepfather all summer(it was that or juvie jail).....
I listened to what I wanted half the day.
Then he listened to what he preferred the other half.
Which was pretty generous of him since it was his work truck.
My Old Man(not step) used to take me into the bars when he was out drinking.
So I got to listen to jukebox alot.
Heard all kinds of stuff and liked a lot of it.
Old man used to take me to work with him at times...he was roofer...he liked C&W.
My stepfather had Louie Prima records.
Guy next door listened to Irish Music every Sunday.

I don't know squat about what is going on today but....
my sense is there are a lot of bands /groups thrown together by music companies.
A manufactured act.
What we called "Bubble gum music" back in the sixties.

FM radio ...late sixties early seventies....free form radio was great...

the so called classic rock station out here in seattle won't even play inna gadda da vida.

The radio stations now thing they are cutting edge cause they play too much Billy Joel.

All the hits of 1974 in the key of d.

Are things very niche now?

Don't listen to radio much these days.
cause it really began to suck.

Most music I listen to now is on youtube:):)

There used to be so many good radio stations.

Can't answer your question ....really...I am not around kids ....single.

All the time. Its not nessicarily bad music, as taste is that of the listener. However I do think a large majority of the younger audience is closed off to the older and newer music. If its not mainstream its not good basically. I was raised on everything and I believe to truely appreciate music you have to take in a little of everything. Basically, its not a good excuse or really an excuse at all, I think its really just the younger crowds reasoning as if you listen to alot of music its has alot of oldie quality in terms of beats, ect and sometimes its just a remake that they interpret as new.

Well, music these days can't be found like in the past. I listen to a lot of rock/punk/expiermental music that isn't on the radio or on tv. But I find it to be very good music. Plus, the music that will be popular one day, is bad the next. Kids only listen to what is put in front of them that's why they're listening to those common names. And who is to say they are bad when the teenagers like listening to it? I would consider it bad taste if it was effecting them in a negative way.

kids hear music from other kids. You can't expect them to always like what they hear either. They may like this music and that's not wrong. Music has changed a lot through the years. Now it's about money and record sales rather than just good music.

That's a pretty dumb excuse but it all just depends on the person. You shouldn't tell someone what is good and bad music. Them, as individuals should be able to like whatever they like and not have someone tell them that they are wrong for liking that. I love the Beatles but I know plenty of people who hate them. We grow and learn to become individuals and people like you are ruining it.

on the other hand.......there were probably adults in your time saying the same thing about the Beatles - believe it or not.

but, no I've not heard that excuse, kids just like it. That's what's 'in' I think what parents listen to may also have an impact on their choices of music. I grew up listening to 'oldies' - at the time I didn't really care for it, but now when I hear those songs, I like them! Not only that, if you didn't like what your parents/older siblings were listening to - you didn't get to whine about it! lol

You know you really can't make someone like something you do, just because you want them too. Kids have to find their own musical heroes, and through that they will eventually get to the good stuff. All it takes is one of those nasty little Jonas boys saying 'ooh I love the Beatles. They rock and are my biggest musical influence' and millions of little girls will start listening to older music because an idol mentioned it in an interview. And if all else fails...one day those kids will grow up and lose interest in the music they listen to now and discover some more important and influential artists to admire.

ok when im 16 and hate almost every recent band there is right now. I wish i was alive in the late 70's early 80's cuz that is when there was actually some good music left.

i would force those kids to listing to lynyrd skynyrd or zz top. you said you listin to the beatles, then play that for them some time. When they hear a song that they kind of like tell them the meaning to the lyrics, that will help them understand and enjoy music better. actual meaning is what all the crappy bands of today are missing.

The folly of youth! Peer pressure? Call it what you will some people just don't know any better because of the way they were raised. Some people aren't guided into good music by their upbringing/parents/surrounding etc...

In my experience when someone is ready for a certain kind of music it will present it's self to them.
