There are several reasons for having your troops all over the world. First and foremost is defense. It is a pretty strong reminder not to start trouble when the troops are right there. It also makes it easier to get a large amount of troops and equipment where it's needed in times of crisis. One fellow said "becuase we can", that isn't far wrong, as a superpower america can get away with putting troops just about anywhere, a country has to have nothing to lose to risk saying no or a military force large enough to keep the US out. It's generally mutually benificial in a lot of countries because it is an economic opportunity. The US gets the advantages of a military base in a particular region and that region usually gets the boost from hundreds if not thousands of americans spending money on booze and souveniers and general tourist trap things (assuming the country isn't hostile). One of the benefits for US military personel is the consistency and regularity of pay so there is always money to be made when those bases are around. There are also several instances where the US contributes troops to United Nations missions.

When other countries are in trouble, they turn to the USA. We don't go into other countries unless we are asked for help, with the one exception being Iraq. We went after those who did damage to the USA.
