they are right. the paddle shift is the automatic with paddle shifters on the steering wheel and the stick shift is an actual manual transmission with the shifter in the console with an H pattern shift and a clutch.
some exotics and i think a few VWs have paddle shifters that are actually hydraulically shifted TRUE manual transmissions. they perform exceptionally well and shift faster than any other transmission made.
i have heard good things about the paddle shifted corvettes though. they perform well and are much easier to drive. if I'm not mistaken they can be driven like a normal automatic transmission as well where you don't have to use the paddles if you choose not to.

I am not familiar with the Corvette's paddle shifting in particular, but I was recently in the market for a new car, and a salesperson told me that the paddle shifters are not any better performance-wise than an automatic transmission. I have also heard that on most even if you dont shift up, at a certain RPM the transmission will shift anyways. The guy told me that the main advantage of the paddle shifters is it gives the feeling of a manual without the hassle of a clutch, and it also helps when using downshifting to help brake. He said that unless the paddle shifters have a dual clutch transmission like VW's DSG and like in the new Mitsubishi EVO, then it will not give you any extra performance over an automatic transmission.
But the Corvette may be different as I was looking at Subaru's at the time. Also, even if performance wasn't as good, it's still a Vette and has a ton of performance, and shifting with paddles is very fun, and a hell of a lot easier when you are in stop and go rush hour traffic.
SOrry my info wasn't more corvette related, but I hope it still helps.

A stick shift has a clutch and therefore it's a manual transmission. Paddle shifting is a joke automatic transmission that is shifted (your choice) completely automatically between gears or can be shifted manually without a clutch petal.
