2a^2 means that a is squared, or raised to the 2nd power. In orders of operators, powers are performed before multipliers.
In print, a squared function is represented by a superscript 2, but in computer spreadsheets, there was no corresponding operator. So it was created by using the caret, ^, to represent a number raised to the power which follows the caret.
If a=7, then 7 squared = 49. Multiplying it by 2 makes it 98.
By the way, it's also handy for doing square roots. A square root is simply a number raised to the 1/2 power. In other words, 25^.5 = 5.

^ means raised to the power of
It is difficult to type in an expression with exponents, so that symbol is used, as well as the square root symbol; instead it is expressed here as square root of 98.

3^2 = 3² = 9. ^ is how you write an exponent in many computer languages, and how you have to write it when your text editor can't do superscripts.
