The advantage of separating the genders, at least at certain points of their education, is that each group can focus on their schoolwork without being distracted by hormones. I've heard that there is a lot of evidence that boys in middle and high school do far better academically if they are in an all-male school with a male teacher. Girls have different advantages if they are in a single-sex school - they don't try to play dumb to impress the boys, and they take each other seriously, rather than having to deal with hyper-competitive boys who tend to denigrate their ideas.

The negative effect is that if there isn't enough interaction with the opposite sex, each side becomes uncomfortable with the presence of the other. I spent a year in another country as a child and attended a girls' school for that year. When I came back to the U.S., I had no idea of how to relate to boys.

College-wise, I think it's great to have non co-ed institutions. Read this for info about women's colleges: http://me.essortment.com/benefitswomens_rtso.htm

No, they need to be around and communicate with the other gender. Both genders are so much different.
