The sum of the numbers 1, 2, 3, ... , n-1, n is given by:

n*(n+1) / 2

So the first 50 natural numbers sum to:

(50) * [ (50) + 1 ] / 2
. = 50 * 51 / 2
. = 1275

1 + 2 + 3 + ... + 48 + 49 + 50 =
(1 + 50) + (2 + 49) + (3 + 48 ) + .... + (25 + 26) =
25(51) = 1275

that's 1st plus last time half the number of terms.
