Usually on the top of the case, near the end closest you. Look for a small hole, about the size of two grains of rice side by side.

Reading the manual would be a good first step to try, if your laptop has a microphone it should tell you exactly where it is (if it doesn't mention a microphone then you probably don't have one).

It would probably be a small hole, a few millimetres in diameter somewhere on your laptop (though it could be almost anywhere).

If you don't have a microphone built in you should be able buy a microphone to plug into computers at pretty much any computer store. They just plug into the microphone port somewhere on your laptop (it'll be a round 3.5 mm socket with a microphone symbol next to it, in the colour coding it is the pink one but most laptops ignore the colour coding, especially with audio connectors, the other similar port next to it will be the one for headphones which you don't want to plug a microphone into).

If you get headphones with a built in microphone plug the one with three elements in the plug into the headphone socket and the one with two into the microphone socket.

If your dell is similar to my dell, then the microphone is a tiny hole on the chassis just to the right of the right arrow key. (under the right shift key).
Surprisingly, mine is actually quite good for chat and recording, so I didn't find it necessary to get another one.

Go to the program Sound Recorder under Accessories and record and make some noise to see if there indeed is a mic. I'm sure you can pinpoint where it is with a little exploration. Sometimes, it's above the keyboard, sometimes above the monitor screen.

Check your user manual. or setup guide. It will have a diagram of what you have.
