first mutliply through the ()
8.9 + 3.6a - 1.2 = 14.9
simpifly
7.7 + 3.6a = 14.9
now subtract through both sides by 7.7 to get the 3.6a alone
3.6a = 7.2
now divide through both sides by 3.6 to get a by itself
a = 2

there is your answer
