We used to live right next to Humble (in Spring) because we wanted to be closer to I-45 (my husband works on the west side of town).

Humble can be pretty hillbilly and dingy and overgrown in spots, but the houses are cheap. If you want to live out that far, you might want to consider Kingwood. I'm generally opposed to planned communities like The Woodlands and Kingwood, but wow, after living in Spring with a child, I definitely appreciate all the trees and parks and walking trails they have to offer. (Plus you'll get WAYYY better schools.)

Houston has some of the ugliest suburbs on the planet. I don't know if you're from a place where there are lots of trees and nice nature-y things. You aren't going to get that in Houston! Be warned!

When you're looking around for houses, stick to places that have nice, clean shopping centers and parks. (Deerbrook Mall is a slum.)

(Also, just fyi, for some reason it's pronounced "Umble." I have no idea why the "h" is silent.)

Humble is pretty nice. It's got just about everything you'll need, with anything else you want a not too far drive away. Like many other suburbs, Humble kind of blurrs together with the surrounding areas, and is slowing being engulfed by Houston. But that's okay because the area has remained nice. Kingwood, a stone's throw from Humble, is very nice. There's also New Caney not too far north of that area, which is slowly developing from a "back country" area to a thriving suburb. The Woodlands (probably one of my favorite suburbs of Houston) is not that far from Humble. And if you ever want to do something downtown (see a play, go visit the museums with your kids, etc.), it isn't a far drive.

As far as I know, the area is fairly safe and a pretty good place for a family.

edit: Don't listen to that Redfalcongirl person, I don't think she really knows where Humble is, besides she sounds like she is still in high school. Sugar Land is also an okay area, although I don't know that much about it. Getting to downtown Houston from Humble is a 30 minute drive, maybe more if you are going with traffic (say 8 on Monday mornings). But for a Saturday jaunt to the Museum of Natural Science, it's a pleasant drive. Humble has a small town feel to it with all the conviences of a big city. If you can't find what you want in Humble, it's just a short drive to a surrounding area. You can easily get to the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavalion in the Woodlands for a concert (30 minutes) or for great Woodlands shopping. You can easily get to the Galleria area for great shopping and restaurants (30-45 minutes). Houston is a great place to live, even if you live in the suburbs. So you have to commute a little; it's not that big of a deal. You end up getting to live in a great area with good schools for your kids, cheaper prices, and safe neighborhoods.

I grew up in Humble and I guarantee you I never said to be from Houston. I saw I'm from Humble which is just north of Houston. That being said these days it's hard to tell where Houston ends and Humble begins, gotten quite congested with all the traffic.

humble is a suburb but everything is there that you'd find in a "downtown", it's not so much outside of houston just kinda blurs together, kingwood is a nice suburb, and the woodlands
good luck on your move

I DONT THINK THAT PERSON KNEW WHERE HUMBLE IS LOCATED. HUMBLE IS NOT THAT FAR FROM DOWNTOWN PROBABLY 20 MINUTES. ITS A REALLY NICE AREA DEPENDING ON WHAT PART OF HUMBLE YOU ARE IN. IT HAS A SMALL TOWN FEEL TO IT. I AM NOT TO SURE ABOUT THE SCHOOLS IN THE AREA.

Cypress is just a little north of Houston and it is a very nice area. Big pine trees and nice schools. I had some friends who let me stay with them during Hurricane Rita.

Location, location, location. :)

Umble is very nice! It's on the northern side and has pretty much anything you could want as far as retail and restaurants, etc.
I just can't keep hearing Umble (humble) and Youston (houston) without cringing, but that's how it is.

sugarland area would be better. oh and Austin high school rocks. Whatever you do DO NOT send your kids to Clements High School if they are in high school. Sure clements has extraordinary academic stats and scores but all of my friends who go to clements say they don't like it because academically it is too competitive and everyone there are all in gangs and get into drugs. Its not a good school, trust me. Oh and most of them get drugs because most kids who go to clements are filthy rich and so they have enough money for cocaine and nowdays you can see pot and crack everywhere being sold on the streets.
Sugarland isnt that expensive unless you live in the filthy rich area near the First Colony Mall. But in Fort Bend area its not that expensive, and if you got any high schoolers, send them to Austin High because Austin is so much better than Kempner, Clements, Elkins, and all them. Our extracurricular activities are better. academically we are not the best but that depends on every student now dosen't it and you know that living in south Texas, not everyone cares about their grades or education here. All about attitude. anyways but yeah don't move to Humble, move to sugarland!
oh and its more convenience than humble because we are closer to houston to where we can get lots of stuff but not too close to where its too busy and crowded. Sugarland nice area with more space than houston but close enough so that it matches conveniences and stuff. Like if you wanna got to a concert, and u live in sugarland you usually only have to drive 30 minutes-1 hour to Cynthia woods pavaillion. But if you live in humble you would have to drive from a hour to 2 hours or more.
oh and the thing about moving to north houston is that its real expensive. Kingwood is waaay expensive I heard. go to south houston instead at least. i think its better but oh well you can decide yourself
