Shaunice has 36 feet of fence to put around her rectangular flowerbed. How long and how will the flowerbed have to be so that she has 72 square feet of area to plant flowers?

for area, LW = 72
for perimeter, 2L + 2W = 36, so
L + W = 18
L = 18 - W, and then
(18 - W)W = 72
18W - W² = 72
W² - 18W + 72 = 0

to solve the quadratic by factoring you have to think of factors of 72 that add up to 18, which is all the original problem was anyway. and of course that makes L = 12 and W = 6.
