I will be moving to St. Louis and wanted to know what everyone thinks of this area west of lafayette square? It is at I-44 and Jefferson. Is this area dangerous or up and coming? I know that a bunch of new houses were built everywhere, but it could still be shady. Thanks!

This is a very diverse neighborhood and some of the housing is mixed income. Even in established Lafayette Square there is a fair amount of crime such as burglaries and car thefts. This neighborhood has been in transition for some time and has not totally arrived yet but is slowly working on it. Change will take quite a few more years to totally happen. If you are sensible and take reasonable precautions, you should be OK. I would probably want more info on housing values and crime statistics before I made a final decision.

I've driven through the neighborhood several times on my way home from work.

It's a nice mixed-income neighborhood. There are certain blocks I might care to avoid, but for the most part it looks pretty safe.

Like all cities, St. Louis has crime. The best thing you can do is be pro-active - buy a security system (or buy stickers that SAY you have a security system), put in motion-detector lights around your doors, and if you have windows that are easily reachable from ground level, see about putting in unobtrusive bars (or, better yet, get vinyl or acrylic windows that won't break).

No, too dangerous. Try the Square or Soulard.or Benton Park.

EDIT: I am not bashing the Gate District. My mother lives in Lafayette Sq.
