your HR department at your job should have given you information on uneployment.
when you work and pay taxes, a portion of your earnings is withheld for taxes, etc. another portion is witheld for disability/uneployment insurance. if you have a work history going back as long as you say you have, you have paid into it enough to collect benefits (as long as you weren't working under the table or "off the books"). contact your local unemployment office (in california its called the Employment Development Department). usually you have to complete an application. since you were laid off, you should qualify. then they give you twice monthly checks. the check amount will represent a percentage of how much you were making in the last 3 months before the layoff.

As long as you have worked in 9 of the last 12 months, you should be able to collect. Contact your State Dept of Labor which will guide you to your county office.
