Stay at a place that is affordable, save your money and get a small room at the YMCA or stay at a hostel - take your time to hook up with a good potential roommate. .

Finding a good and reliable roommate is important -- I've noticed that many times, the strangers (even formerly old friends) can't live together or don't get along for various reasons including someone mooching or not paying their share of the costs and after a short while, split up.

Good luck.

Don't stay at a hostel. I've heard horror stories about thieving from you. I second the craigslist option. Just screen potential roommates carefully or you'll be stuck with the whole lease and you'll have to be looking for a roommate.

If you're comfortable with hostel life, that would be a good financial decision while you search. Check out craigslist, and trust your instincts when selecting your housemates.

Look for a two to three month sublet to buy some time. That would also give you time to check out different neighborhoods in person.
