Rule #1 Size matters. Reflectors will give you more bang for the buck in general. The wider the aperture, the more detail you can see. Apart from that, don't pay much attention to the advertised magnification(zoom factor) it doesn't mean much. You can zoom in 10,000 times on your digital picture too but you will only see a single pixel which won't look like anything. This is somewhat controversial, but I would recommend a GOTO telescope. This is one that can move to the object you want to see automatically. It can be very frustrating for an inexperienced viewer to try to find an object in the sky. The sky is bigger than it looks. You'll see more stuff in less time. An don't expect to see the stuff in astronomy magazine through your telescope. The galaxies that look gorgeous on the cover will look like a very faint, very small, fuzzy blob if you can see them at all. And enjoy it as much as possible. You can see a lot of cool stuff through a small telescope. Bryan
