I am trying to make a hidden key cupboard in a wooden wall made up of planks. I want to make the cupboard door of the same planks but figure when the door opens it will need room on one side to open. The only solution I can figure is to have hinges which extend forward when the door opens allowing the wood of the door to pass in front of the wood of the wall and overlap it as it opens. Does anyone know if such hinges exist and what they are called?

If you can't find the proper hinges, you could build a small set of shelves that recess into the wall and have it on hinges with the key cupboard on the back of the shelves. Here's a link to a place that builds hidden doors. It may give you some ideas.

Look on line for Soss hinges, they are specifically designed for hidden doors, in sizes from cabinets to full size hardwood doors.

Yes, they are a special item though.
You can see the type at some custom cabinet places.
Large ones, you would probably need to fabricate.
