Hi. This will explain the basics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_system
Usually you are much better off using a new drive, but most of the time an older drive with the same file structure will work on a newer machine.

Parts of a computer:

Case (the computer house)
Power Supply (to power devices)
Motherboard (to link devices together and allow communication)
CPU (for processing data)
Heatsink and fan (for cooling CPU)
RAM (to run processes that you have open, the OS and other programs)
Video Card (to display to the monitor)
Hard drive (for data storage)
CD-ROM (for reading and, or loading data)
CD-RW or DVD-RW (for transferring data to a compact disk)

Yes, you can use older hard drives, will no doubt require a format, and it may cause the system to run a bit slow.
Having said that, it also depends on the way the hard drive connects to the motherboard, some are PATA drives (a wide ribbon cable - most older models), and some are SATA drives (mostly used in newer systems - faster communication) a narrow cable.
