Depends on what sector of america you look at.

A higher percentage of children and adults have health insurance now, than they did 10 years ago. 10 years ago, is when the record of 16.3% of the people being uninsured was set.

Exports are up over 10 years ago.

Imports are up over 10 years ago.

The trade deficit is up over 10 years ago, but the growth of the trade deficit, is alot lower, 10% growth yearly now, vs 160% yearly back then.

Not as many major corporations cooking their books, now as compared to 10 years ago.

Lets see am I better off now? I wish I knew then what I know now, and I would have only had one child, not 7,I wouldn't have gotten married, three times, I don't believe I would have ever gotten married. What is broken is my heart, but good news it is on the mend.

financially I would say yes, but we seem to have lost our civility as a world...there is no middle ground anymore. Everyone seems hostile to any opinion but their own...we don't seem to have the time anymore to settle differences. Even fights that were once fought with hands are now fought with guns. The moral compass has lost it's bearing. And I know what you are looking for...and I don't think you can blame the President. I only hope whoever is elected next has a very thick skin...because it is a blood sport now.

exactly as I thought and the instant thumbs down proves the point...stop hating and get a life so you aren't so bitter!

I own my own business and pay for you to sit in front of your little computers and gripe about how terrible everything is...Bush rocks, the war was the right thing to do, Hillary Clinton is not the man for the job, Jimmy Carter is an anti-semite...and your wackos like peelosi, kerry, reid, boxer, kennedy are ruining the country...I will laugh evertime I go to the bank and pass a drunk guy who says he's hungry but really wants the money for drugs or booze and I keep walking! I also would like to nuke a baby seal for Jesus!

I can say I am better off. What's broken ? The sensibilities of Americans who would even consider letting Billary getting back to the White House, once was disgusting enough.

Toss in the lack of stick to it attitude that the Greatest Generation had during a much bloodier war, but this one has the same perils id we lose.

Obviously, I can't speak for everyone, but we certainly are....in fact, not just me and my husband, but HIS family and MY family. Lots of broken things, though, like our seriously failed social programs. I have no problem helping the truly needy, but the system is screwed. In fact, I think social programs are a lot like liberalism....looks great on paper, but the implementation? Not so much.

Edit - "the rich certainly is" - you probably got the thumbs-down for poor English.

Well---
America's name is mud all the over the world.
Our troops are dying in a war started by this administration on false pretenses
Our real enemies are protected by a dictator our "president" claims is an ally of ours
Our health care system is collapsing
The housing market has gone down the tupes and tens of thousand s of families are losing their homes
Thanks to the refusal of the GOP for the last 10 years to enact immigration reform, we have 12 million undocumented people in this country
Our so-called "free trade" has turned out to be carte blance for unethical firms to import unsafe products by the shipload.
One of our great cities--New Orleans--remains in ruins because political cronies at FEMA are spending mroe time stealing the money that's supposed to go to rebuild the city than in actually doing their jobs.

No, we aren't better off. I used to vote Republican about as much as I voted Democrat. Not any more. I'll vote the straight Dem ticket before I'll support this mess.

Weren't you the bass player for Led Zeppelin, and more recently, the wonderful strings player in many of the Heart arrangements and concerts, inlcuding the violin, mandolin and balalaika ( sp) ?

What's broken? The spirit of the people at the hands of W and cronies. The world hates us, blacks and whites are still at each other's throats, illegal immigrants are trying to leave their crummy country to come here, and are hated, the govenrment is still trying to tell us what we can and can't do with our bodies ( no abortion, no stem cell research, you can drink alcohol and smoke nicotine but can't use marijuana ), the democracy isn't working because the US Supreme Court is now in the business of appointing the president, the electoral college doesn't work because your one vote is really not one vote but a percentage/fraction of a delegate's votes, and, the environment is in revolution.

Well, the budget was balanced 10 years ago, so in that regard we are worse off. We are also involved in two wars and we have a little less freedom than we did 10 years ago.

Aside from that, there isn't much that has changed. We still have problems with social security and healthcare. The economy was booming in '97, but it isn't bad at the moment (aside from sub-prime mortgages and gas prices). I think there is a lot more concern about the economy than there was in '97 (when we were in the middle of the internet boom).
