In ancient times Abraham was told (by God) to have a child, but since his wife, Sarah, was infertile, his servant girl, Hagar was to be the mother. The name of this first son was Ishmael. Later, Sarah became fertile and bore Isaac. Ishmael and Hagar were exiled. The descendants of Isaac became Christians and Jews, whereas the descendants of Ishmael became Muslims.

In modern times, Israel was created in 1948. The first conflict was that same year. Arabic countries didn't want to recognize the new state, since it hadn't been there before the west created it. A ceasefire was declared. Egypt took Gaza strip and Jordan took the West Bank. Israel later reclaimed these territories, and then some, in the 6 days war, and would have taken more if it weren't for the rest of the world saying that's enough. Since then it has gone back and forth between the Jews and Arabs.

The nation of Israel fought a war against the Arab League in 1948. A cease fire a year later established the Green Line. The link I have attached shows the information in the wikipedia page to be disputed.

In the cease fire, Jordan had the West Bank, Egypt had the Gaza Strip, and I seem to recall that Israeli troops took the Old City of Jerusalem in the 6 day war in 1967.
