He had a new pair of cleats that hurt so bad that he played barefooted, thus the nickname "Shoeless"

In 1919, while with the White Sox, he was alledgely tied to 7 other players that rigged the World Series, even though he hit .375 in the Series and was banned by Kennasaw Mountain Landis in 1920 for the rest of his life for the "Black Sox Scandal".

Joe Jackson was one of eight players of the 1919 Chicago White Sox who were banned by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for throwing the world series.

The others were Chick Gandil, Buck Weaver, Happy Felsh, Swede Risberg, Fred McMullin, Lefty Williams, and Eddie Cicotte. Weaver claimed to have no part in the fix and repeatedly petitioned to be reinstated, though he never was.

The movie "Eight Men Out" tells the story of the "Black Sox".

Watch eight men out. It's a great movie. The skinny is that Joe's whole teamWhite Sox)through the series in 1919(when players didn't make a ton) Joe and his team mates were kicked out of baseball. Thing is, Joe had amazing stats throughout the season. he played hard. did great, but he did know about it and allegedly took a bribe(not confirmed) Say it aint so Joe!

"Shoeless" Joe got his nickname when bothered by a blister on his foot caused by his new cleats. He took his shoes off before an at bat, reached first and was heckled by a fan. The fan called him a "shoeless son of a gun" and the name stuck with him ever since.

Jackson was complicit (unquestionably aware of it, and possibly participated in, though by MLB's regulations, simply knowing of such a thing and not reporting it is sufficient to enact a permanent expulsion) in a game-fixing conspiracy to throw select games of the 1919 World Series in order to allow mobster-gamblers to win large bets. The eight players have become known as the "Black Sox", and were permanently expelled from MLB's graces late in the 1920 season.

He and seven other players were accused of losing the 1919 World Series intentionally, and although they never were convicted, they were banned in 1921.
