My Great Aunt is Sylvia, but goes by Sylvie. I think Sylvia is better as a whole name, but Sylvie makes a cute nickname. Then she could be Sylvie as a kid, but Sylvia when she enters the adult world because it just sounds more "grown up" to me

Sylvia was my grandmother's name.
I personally don't like either name...(sorry Grandma! LOL) - but if I were choosing one or the other, I would go with Sylvia, and then she could be "Sylvie" as a kid, but could go by Sylvia if she wants to sound more "grown up" when she becomes an adult.
(I'd be afraid some people would be tempted to nickname Sylvia "Syllie" (Silly) instead of "Sylvie")

I almost always choose the longer version - Sophia versus Sophie, for example.
But in this case, I think Sylvie sounds French - and fresh! And Sylvia sounds dated.
So go for Sylvie!

Sylvia is a name she can grow up with. Sylvie is more of a nickname.
