Syria, Lebanon, Jordan & Israel.
After WWI saw the Ottoman Empire fall, (1918), Britain promised land to the Jews, (Israel), and the Palestinians, (Parts of modern day Syria, Lebanon, Jordan & Israel).
In 1943 Lebanon gained independence from France, and in 1946, Syria & Jordan gained independence from France & UK. Israel became a legitimate state mandated by the UN in 1948.
The surrounding Arab/Muslim countries have since been at odds (to put it nicely), with Israel claiming that the Jews, (who have been historically attached to this region since long before Muhammad was born), had no right to be there, yet none seemed concerned about the surrounding Arab countries who refused to allow the Palestinians access to land in their countries.

The British retain control until may 1948 but turned the decision about the fate of the territory to the UN who voted to partition.. The day before the British was to give up control the 1948 Arab-Israeli War started. Following the war, the State of Israel retained nearly all the territory that would have been assigned to it in the 1947 UN Partition Plan, as well as half of the land intended to become the Arab state of Palestine and a portion of the territory intended for international administration around Jerusalem. The remaining half of the land that had been intended to become Palestine along the West Bank of the Jordan River was annexed by Jordan, as was most of the Jerusalem enclave; the Gaza Strip along the Mediterranean coast, also included in the Arab state territory, was captured by Egypt.

Britain left Palestine in a mess, they were of the opinion the Arabs were going to win the war and they did their best to be sure of that by limiting Jewish entry into the Palestinian Protectorate. But the Jewish people won the war with the Arabs, who often sold their property to the Jews feeling that when they won they would come back and take their property back and have the Jews money too. It didn't work out that way, the surrounding Arab nations wanted nothing to do with them, and they lost the war, like any nation that loses a war, they lost the right to that land. It wasn't given too, or acquired from, it was fought for with Israeli blood and they won it fair and square.

The idea was that there would be a Palestinian and a Jewish state.

What happened was that there was a war. Both the Arab nations and the newly formed state of Israel were in the wrong. The Arabs for not allowing Jews to have a homeland, and Israel for making a land grab and displacing loads of Palestinians.

Since then, things have gone from bad to worse.

I hope and pray for a just peace for Jews and Palestinians in Israel, with the creation of a democratic and peaceful Palestinian state, that lives in harmony with Israel.
