When you come across a new word, whether in writing or in speech, look up its meaning and spelling in a good dictionary immediately and memorise both.
Always keep a dictionary handy. You can also carry a pocket dictionary when you travel.
Ask a friend or relative who is good in spelling to check all your writings, notes, etc. Check the errors pointed out and correct them. Write the correct spellings of the wrongly spelt words at least 10 times on a piece of paper so that you get to practise the correct spelling.
Use spell check provided in any forum. See the errors you have made and correct them the same way mentioned above.
Give special attention to words that sound the same but are spelt differently (homonyms) and understand their meanings clearly. Write down such words and their meaning as best as you can, at least 5 times, and check if you got their spelling right.
Never put off reference to a dictionary when you are in doubt about the spelling of any word you come across in any writing or in speech - whether it is yours or someone else's. Many a times you would find that the association of a particular word to a particular writing, speech or situation helps you to remember the correct spelling if you happen to check the dictionary immediately.
As other have pointed out, practice helps immensely in correct spelling. Avoidance of SMS and chat message that usually encourage spelling errors is certainly a good way not to worsen your spelling skills. If you do have to write SMS/chat messages, try to use correct spelling of words even if the person at the other end shows impatience or if your messaging takes more time.
Your positive approach and desire to improve are noteworthy. I am sure your spelling would be close to perfect in a short time. Good luck!

I have a cousin who's a Principal, when he was a teacher his students always asked him how to spell something, his reply would be "Look it up, that's what a dictionary is for". I've said this and gotten a reply like "How can I look it up if I don't know how to spell it." I would say "sound it out and get an idea how it's spelled and go from there".
If you have a dictionary, you can try this trick, after awhile, your spelling should improve.
I'm not calling you dumb, not by any means. My cousin is smart, everyone has a weakness. Maybe spelling is yours. Hope things work out well and good luck.

You may not like this answer, but give up on the "text messaging" format. When anyone gets in the habit of typing phonetically and without punctuation, they get sloppy, and they'll have a hard time spelling correctly when it's required (like in a resume). The English language has a LOT of words that aren't spelled like they sound, and the only way to learn to spell them is to memorize them. Practice DOES make perfect.
By the way, I admire you for your ambition. Good luck!

Hi,
Spelling skills are at least in part a function of visual memory. With practise you will be able to see when a word 'looks wrong'. Read every day, write every day, keep a dictionary on your desk and check when in doubt. DO NOT rely on your word processor's spell checker.
You could play on-line Scrabble, as well. I've provided the link to an excellent Scrabble site.

Read more, memorize, skim the dictionary for fun occasionally (improves vocabulary too), learn some English spelling "rules." I am a very good speller and I memorize the spelling of words without even thinking about it and I go through the dictionary sometimes.

Like the above said, practice practice practice. Try typing on the computer, but instead of hitting spell check, go through and manually correct them.

Good luck either comes your way or it doesn't. You can start by stop taking the blame for other peoples mistakes. Practice the Golden Rule and always remember it is better to give than receive. Do all this and just maybe "good luck" will come your way.
