20% of $40 would be 40 x 0.20 = 8. So $8 would be the amount taken off, and $32 would be the result. For example, a $40 sweater with a 20% discount would sell for $32.

The answer is $8.00. The answer $32.00 is not correct. If the price is $40.00 and you take off $8.00 {which is 20%} then you would pay $32.00. Come on people let's read the question correctly.

8 dollars off. I always remember it by tens. To get 10 percent off, just move the decimal spot over one to the left. you get 4. 10times2=20, so 4times2=8.
Does that make sense?

re-stating the problem: $40 less 20%
40 - (0.20*40)
40 - 8 = $32.00
