one ability a counselor MUST have is the ability to "LISTEN" counseling is listening to the person. you must disregard all your biases and respect the person's perceptions of things. you're not there to give unsolicited advices. for most people that go to counselors do not necessarily need someone to advise them. they just want someone to listen. and if ever you will give advices to them, make sure it's out of your moral, ethical, and judgmental standards. tell them all the optional actions they can do and tell them what might be the consequences of these. allow them to choose what they think is the best thing to do. remember, you're a counselor, not an ADVISER. hope i helped you..^_^

Proper counseling is by no means a set standard. Depending on the belief system of the therapist as well as their education background you can get different types of advice and direction. However saying that reality therapy is proved to work for some, and aversion therapy for others. It depends on the issue.

i would say listening to what the person has to say is important
and then in guiding them you should never post judgment on them. you can never tell them that they should do something just guide them to doing the right thing
