I just had a tree cut down (cottonwood if it matters) and the largest logs are around 24" diameter. I plan to use a power log splitter to split the wood but I'm wondering if I should split now or wait until next year?

now ,the propose for spliting is to let the wood dry out faster, exposes more surface area, plus it will be harder to split once it drys out,

For some reason logs split better in cold, freezing weather, but then again I split by hand with a maul. If you have a power splitter, split it green so it'll dry out faster.

I think you should go ahead and start planning now to have the wedding. I don't think you should wait after you guys have lived together. Sometimes when couples decide to move in together and been together so long, they feel why should they get married. If the man cares about you, why not make that next step and make it official? Some people say you never know that person until you live together. Seems to me you may already know him since he used to spend nights with you and let himself in your apartment. You've been dating him 5 years. I think you should plan it soon. The more you wait, the longer you guys may procrastinate. Hope this helps.

My experience is that it is easier to split dry logs but it is better to split them freshly cut for drying purposes. Try hand splitting a green log as opposed to a dry log and you will see what i mean.

The wood needs to be seasoned one year before burning....But you need to split it while it is green..cottonwood is not a very good fire[place wood..but if it is free as you have cut it down..I would burn it..I just wouldn't buy cottonwood to burn...
