Follow 2 simple rules:

1) Whatever you do to one side of the equation do to the other to maintain the nature of th equation.

2) Get the variable to one side of the equation.

So in the case of this equation:
0.2x - 8 = -2 - x
0.2x + x - 8 = -2 -x + x (add x to both side to get variable to one side)
1.2x - 8 = -2 (result of adding x)
1.2x - 8 + 8 = -2 + 8 (add 8 to both sides to remove the -8)
1.2x = 6 (result of adding 8)
1.2x/1.2 = 6/1.2 (divide by 1.2 to find the value of x)
x = 5 (result of dividing by 1.2 and the value of x)

I hope that this helps and you understand how I got the answer.

Good luck
