what's going on with Myanmar?

What started all this incidents on Myanmar? Why are monks protesting? on what issue? to who?

Monks protested against the Burmese leadership for curtailing freedom such as the continous detention of some lesders. The Military junta instead of giving in to the protests, staged a crackdown on the leaders of the mass actions.
