Because money and socio-economic status are indications that the man is an effective human being. This realization is, however, not limited to American girls.

Would you want your daughter to marry someone who is going to be a burden to her, force her to live a life of deprivation while he sits on his duff, acts anti-socially and imagines himself to the "above" all that materialistic stuff?

And, fyi, having money and socio-economic status is not prohibitive of a man being a loving, considerate mate.

A lot of American girls do seem to be "materialistic" but not all of them... if you go to any college campus you will find sever American Women with a vast array of interests and beliefs.
