The Dobsonian telescope is really quite simple, and if you are at all mechanically inclined and skilled with basic tools, it will not be difficult.

If you want to shape and finish your own optics, that is a skill that requires some practice.

If you are not mechanically inclined and not practiced with tools, you will save yourself a lot of trouble and aggravation by just buying one. The prices are quite reasonable.

Try an internet search on "dobsonian telescope plans." You should find the information, pictures, and diagrams you need.

Have fun!

This isn't an answer to the question, but I couldn't resist.

I had a chance to meet John Dobson ('inventor' of the Dobsonian mount). This guy is absolutely amazing. Anyway, this is by far the easiest way to mount a Newtonian reflector. If you are planning to buy the optics, then this is really a no brainer. Just make sure that your balance is correct and that there is something in place to reduce the friction between mount and tube and you'll be golden.

If you get a chance to hear John speak, take it! You'll be astounded at how sharp he is...

A telescope is barely as reliable as its weakest link, so which you won't be in a position to make up for a nasty popular with extra suitable eyepieces. the usually used of the reflect will look in diffused, low assessment information, like valuable factors on Jupiter and Mars, or texture in nebulae. as a results of fact top rate optics scatter much less easy, you will even have the flexibility to be sure basically a tiny bit deeper. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, you're speaking approximately paying two times as plenty or extra for a reflect that's probably 10% extra suitable. the adaptation is extremely diffused in maximum circumstances. in case you had the two mirrors facet-by means of-facet and the sky circumstances have been very reliable, you will possibly have the flexibility to %. the winner. yet those chinese language mirrors are specially nicely made, and could carry out in basic terms high quality. Get the top rate reflect if money's no merchandise, or in case you will possibly desire to have the very superb. in any different case, i think of you would be pleased with the chinese language reflect. I even have a Taiwanese (Guan Sheng) reflect and it works great. yet do be specific to're deciding to purchase a reliable high quality, diffraction-constrained paraboloid, and which you will replace it in case you get a lemon. There are some doubtful products being presented on the industry on eBay and different locations.

Hi. This site explains it. http://www.moonlightsys.com/atm/ I also met Mr. Dobson at Stellaphane in Vermont. He declined credit for inventing this mount saying "Most cannons are mounted the same way." http://www.johndobson.org/schedule.html

Dobsonians are simple to use but not always very practical since you cannot attach a clock drive....at least i've never seen it.
