I have been buying cotton fabric for 40 years at 45 inches wide. Most fabric comes in 36, 45, 58/60 inches wide.

I'm with ladybugs.

Fabrics been mostly 45 inches wide for as long as I can remember.

But I've seen old patterns with yardage for 36 inch wide.

There were restrictions on wasting fabric during WWII. So I image after that things changed, plus machinery improved so making wider fabric was easier.

My 82 year old mother who's sewed for years agrees with me.

It has always depended on where you purchased it and how much you were willing to spend on the wider width. How long have you been using bolt fabric?
