Phil Rizzuto thrilled a generation of Yankees fans with his Hall of Fame play at shortstop and entertained the next two generations from the broadcast booth.
A day after he died in a West Orange, N.J., nursing home at 89, Yankee fans of all ages expressed their love and admiration for the man whom most knew by his nickname, "The Scooter."
At Yankee Stadium Tuesday night, after he passed away, before their game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Yankees observed a moment of silence in honor of Rizzuto and aired a tribute video. The Yankees sported "10" patches -- Rizzuto's uniform number -- on the left sleeve of their uniforms. The stadium's Stars and Stripes flew at half-staff and fresh flowers rested on Rizzuto's plaque in Monument Park.
They had a "roll call" in the first inning, when fans in the bleachers call out each member of the Yankees' starting lineup, concluded with a touching addition -- "Phil Riz-zu-to!"
That fit so well, as Rizzuto was the people's Hall of Famer, known just as well, if not more so, for his wonderful sense of humor as for his stellar play

In memory of Phil Rizzuto, who stopped being the oldest living Hall Of Famer on 13-August.
He played for the Yankees from 1941-42 and '46-56, winning the 1950 AL MVP Award and a part of nine AL champions and seven World Series winning teams (1941, '47, and '49-53). Plus he was a longtime announcer for the team after he retired.

It's in honor of Phil Rizzuto. The "Scooter", who died in August, wore the number 10 during his playing career with the Yankees from 1941-56.
