"On December 24, 1865, a group of six Confederate veterans met in Pulaski, Tennessee, and formed the Ku Kux Klan, derived the Greek word 'kuklos' ("circle"). In a Nashville convention in 1867, the KKK adopted a declaration, stating its intention was to "protect the weak, the innocent and the defenseless...to relieve the injured and oppressed." At this meeting, Nathan Bedford Forrest became the first Grand Wizard of the Empire."
